Beauty and Sanitation during COVID-19 aka Coronavirus

At this time when hand sanitizers and disinfectant sprays are sold out on all store shelves, big industries and organizations are ‘closing-up shop’ and cities are under major quarantine, we thought it was fitting to discuss how The Beauty Team practices good hygiene and sanitation always when on all makeup and hair jobs! The Coronavirus has no doubt given us this idea to write about how us as makeup artists and hair stylists are germaphobes and obsess about good hygiene, always!

Our clean practices have always included cleaning our brushes in front of our clients, using disposable mascara wands, sharpening and cleaning eye pencils and lip pencils with 70% rubbing alcohol after we sharpen them. There is absolutely no cutting corners for our team in this department!

We have had clients compliment us on the fact that we take time to clean our brushes in between clients as it is so important. What you will often hear us saying at corporate events or beauty bar events is ‘please have a seat and talk to me about your beauty preferences as I sanitize my hands and clean my brushes’. This statement is always something our clients usually smile about and appreciate! Then, going home to spend time giving our hair tools or makeup brushes a good cleaning or shampooing is our life story!

Last, we don’t double dip! We scrape off lipsticks, glosses and concealers, for example, with a palette knife, put it on a stainless steel clean palette, and take product with a clean brush from the palette.

During this incredibly odd, scary, and extra cautious time with Coronavirus we wanted to share some of the precautions we take as artists to keep ourselves and our clients healthy. It’s something we pride ourselves in! So remember to wash your hands & even clothes often as the virus can live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, on your clothes for 6 to 12 hours & on a metal surface for 12 hours!

Wedding Feature in Elegant Wedding Magazine Spring 2020

March 11, 2020

Last summer in late July, we had the pleasure to work with Samantha who definitely tops our list as one of the sweetest clients we’ve worked with! Our hair and makeup team travelled to Oakville to get Sam and her bridal party ready for her big day. The ceremony was taking place at St. Andrew Church, where Sam would arrive in her grandfather’s ‘61 Thunderbird. The reception would then take place in downtown Toronto, at the gorgeous boutique hotel venue, One King West. Samantha is also a talented jewelry designer, and designed her wedding bands, and bridal party’s jewelry as well! You can check out her work here.

Winterizing Your Foundation

‘Winterizing’ your foundation for the colder months is a thing! When doing our client’s makeup during these winter months, we always keep in mind that with their skin being more susceptible to dehydration & dryness throughout the day, it’s always good to take preventative measures to make it look more luminous. That can include changing your foundation in the winter months versus sticking to your same foundation all-year round!

For someone who typically has oily skin in the summer, it’s not out of the ordinary to have really dry skin in the winter depending on your environment (due to heaters, lifestyle, location & environment). A foundation that will make your skin glow will usually have light-refracting technology that makes it appear extra radiant, but will also have added hydration to go hand-in-hand with your winter moisturizer. Here are some of our favourite foundations that you can use in winter (that you might not use in the summer depending on your skin-type!) to help your skin look amazing.

Light coverage:

For a no-makeup-makeup dewy finish, the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Natural Skin Perfector is a great option. It’s border-line skincare with spf 30 that’s needed in the winter months as well! It is described as a ‘Hydrating Complex made up of Macadamia and Kukui Seed Oils that helps increase the skin’s moisture levels long-term for 24 hours of hydration, while reducing the signs of visibly dry skin’.

Medium coverage:

Tarte’s ‘Shape-Tape’ Hydrating Gel foundation is very luminous, buildable & oil free (yes you can get hydration from an oil free foundation too), with hyaluronic acid and collagen that work to plump and smooth the skin!

Lastly, for a more full coverage hydrating foundation I love the Nars Natural Radiant Long-wear Foundation. The name says it all! #TheJustMarriedJacket with Via Calligraphy

Earlier this fall, our beautiful bridal client Stephanie was one of the lucky ladies who got to wear #TheJustMarriedJacket on her wedding day. During her bridal beauty prep with The Beauty Team, Stephanie shared a bit of the story behind the jacket and we loved the whole idea behind it. It’s like a sisterhood of the travelling pants kind of thing that makes an already special day extra special. So naturally we had to find out more! We reached out to Sylvia of Via Calligraphy about the accidental viral project that’s gone international. Find out more about#TheJustMarriedJacket in our Q&A below:

How did you come up with the idea?

In June 2016, when I was getting married, I decided to obsess over painting “Just Married” on the back of my favourite leather jacket. Even though it was an intimate wedding with only 8 guests at city hall, I just wanted an edgy detailed that really was distinctly my own style. The jacket was a hit and I got to be that cool Toronto bride walking down the street. Only a week after that day, I decided that I didn’t want it to sit in my closet and collect dust, so I posted it up on a Toronto wedding trading group. The group didn’t allow for money to be exchanged so I just posted it and asked for a bottle of red wine. The responses were overwhelming and I realized in that moment that every bride asking to rent it actually had a different wedding date. So I kept it for myself and began renting it out every week for just a bottle of red wine. #TheJustMarriedJacket was born organically.

What is your favourite story from a bride about her experience with the jacket?

One of my early renters, Jordana, was looking for something special to represent her dad in her wedding. He had passed away from cancer and he was an avid motorcycle rider. Jordana came upon the project close to when I just started, it felt like it was fate! My dad and father in law are motorcycle riders as well, so it was a sweet connection all around.

Another fun experience was meeting Rima. I had messed up her pickup and she wasn’t able to come get it with how things worked out; feeling really bad for my own mishap, I wanted to get it to her personally. The only time that worked was during her Mehandi party… so me, a complete stranger, went to one of her intimate pre-wedding celebrations. Her family was so welcoming, it was an experience I won’t forget!

What’s the booking process for the jacket and how far ahead should brides expect to book it?

Nowadays brides can go to www.thejustmarriedjacket.com and check the calendar for availability. If it’s free, get in touch through the form on that page and I send details for pickup and drop-off. Brides only get it from Wednesday to Tuesday of the week of their wedding in exchange for just a bottle of red wine (and some photos and their story for my blog!)

Right now most of high season is booked for 2020, and there are some eager brides booking about 2 to 3 years into the future!

How many brides have got to experience “The Just Married Jacket”?

As of October 26, 2019, 119 Toronto brides have worn #TheJustMarriedJacket, which is my original wedding leather jacket.

Since all of the press it’s received, I began to get requests in other cities as well, so I’ve partnered with the most talented and wonderful calligraphy artists around the world who share my values of community over competition. Each one of them has created their own version of the leather jacket and they run their independent chapters in their own cities. We have ones in Montreal, Ottawa, Edmonton, Vancouver, New York City, DC, Chicago, Sacramento, Denver, Baltimore, Oahu, London, and Hong Kong. And cumulatively I’m sure there’s over 500 brides that are now connected through this project!

Do you offer custom pieces through your calligraphy business?

The main service I offer are Calligraphy Classes in Toronto and Event Calligraphy for Brands. And yes! I offer custom painted leather jackets as well now. The only exception is that I will never paint “Just Married” on any more to make sure that I keep the one that’s being shared in the project special for everyone who has participated. It’s all about the story that connects us all and I do everything I can to protect it for the beautiful people who were a part of it.

Vintage Looks for Ricarda’s Toronto Launch

Back in the Summer of 2016, we were hired by a marketing agency to help piece together vintage looks for the restaurant launch of Ricarda’s in Toronto. The agency was using a street team of promotional models to boost the restaurant launch for a two day event where the street teams rode bikes through the city. Two hair and two makeup artists were needed for the styling for the street team activation which was a 50’s and 60’s vintage Mediterranean inspired look.

Here are some of the beauty tips we used to keep the street team looks sweat-proof and last through the summer heat all day long:

Hair was set in pins to cool while makeup was completed to really hold the vintage wave

We used Urban Decay All Nighter setting sprat before, during and after application to be sure the makeup wouldn’t nudge

Quick Lip Tip – hydrate lips with a rich balm prior to any makeup application. Let the balm sit and once the lips are ready, apply a primer first then line the lips with a red liner for definition and proceed with lipstick, blot and repeat

Flash lashes were used for a doe eyed look

We had so much fun using our creativity putting together these looks for the street team activation! The restaurant has been a huge success since the launch with another location opened in Oakville. How to Spice Up Your Staff Appreciation Night

The Beauty Team transformed Imperial Tobacco employees into the Spice Girls and other celebs for a super fun lip sync battle!

We’ve already touched on how you can make your employee appreciation night extra special by providing pampering services like hairstyling, makeup, manicures and massages… but what if you want to take it to the next level and REALLY delight your team? How about an EPIC LIP SYNC BATTLE?! Honestly, this was one of the most fun events we’ve ever been a part of so we thought we’d share it with you in case you’re inspired to do something similar for your team.

Imperial Tobacco recently hosted a staff appreciation event at Toronto’s Hotel X. Over 400 of their staff members were invited for an evening of appreciation and pampering, and the event planners at Zeste Incentive hired The Beauty Team to help make the event one to remember. But we didn’t stop there! The Beauty Team was also enlisted for the after party at Rebel Nightclub, where we provided hair, makeup and wardrobe styling for a super fun lip sync battle. We created celebrity looks inspired by Grease, 50 Cent, the Spice Girls, Beyonce and more, with customized props, wigs and costumes that blew everyone away! How fun is that?!

We know the question on everyone’s minds… how the heck to you transform a group of regular folks into the Spice Girls? Here are some pro tips from one of our talented makeup artists to get you started (thanks Nicole!):

Pop stars are known for wearing bold makeup colours, which look great on stage. Liquid lipstick (we like MAC) is a great base for eyeshadow if you really want it to stand out. Plus, they’re creamy and easy to blend.
You also want to use an eye colour base so the bold colours don’t transfer onto the skin (try Mac’s 24-hour Eye Base).
Layering is key. After applying your eye colour base, then your creamy eye colour, set it all with a powder so it stands the test of sweaty dancing and hot stage lights.
If you don’t use a setting powder, try a good sealer like Green Marble, which is popular among theatre performers.
Exaggerating features helps you take on a celebrity’s look as well, so use lots of highlighting and contouring to mimic the celeb’s facial features. This also works very well for the stage because it’s easier to see from afar.
Glitter can be fun! It catches the light nicely and won’t look too dramatic on stage.
When it comes to lashes… GO BIG or GO HOME! They open up the eyes and make them stand out for the crowd.

How to Get Your Face Ready for those HD Cameras

The Beauty Team helped two speakers get ready for the stage and unforgiving high definition screens at Collision Conference 2019.

Collision Conference is a pretty big deal in the technology world, inviting some of the biggest names in tech, politics and pop culture to speak on the latest innovations in emerging and disruptive tech. At the 2019 conference recently held in Toronto, over 25,000 people showed up to hear from speakers like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Seth Rogen, Ryan Holmes of Hootsuite and many more.

Imagine the pressure of speaking at such a huge event, where the HD cameras will be zooming into your pores and you might even run into PM JT himself… what do you do?! Call The Beauty Team! Two speakers called on us for our HD makeup expertise to help make sure they looked polished and professional for their appearances at the conference. We packed up our gear and brought our mobile hair and makeup services to their hotel rooms (which happened to be at the gorgeous new Hotel X just across the street from the conference venue).

Makeup tips for high definition success

As you may know, HD cameras are pretty unforgiving, highlighting every wrinkle, blemish and flyaway for the world to see. Thankfully, we’ve got some pro makeup tips for that:

To ensure your base makeup appears invisible to the high definition cameras, prep your skin first and blend foundation well (we can’t stress this enough!).
Resist the urge to experiment with bold colours—this is NOT the time to try that new neon orange trend or wacky eyeliner. Natural tones are the most flattering.
Keep blush colours neutral and blend, blend, blend (then blend some more)!
Keep lips looking healthy and luscious by using a lip scrub to get rid of dead skin cells prior to colour application.
Creamy lip colours look best in HD so avoid matte colours (but if you must use matte, try dabbing gloss in the centre of the lips to add dimension and moisture).
Always finish makeup with a fine mist of finishing spray to set your look and also prevent a cakey looking finish.
Keep translucent powder on-hand in case your t-zone gets oily.

90’s Beauty Revival – the BH 90210 reboot

With the reboot of the hit 90’s teen drama Beverly Hills 90210 premiering tonight, we couldn’t help but also take notice of all the 90’s beauty trends that have also made a comeback. Modernize this 90’s trend by diffusing lip liner into your gloss. While the 90’s had harsher lines, 2019 makeup trends are all about seamless blending. We like to apply a bit of gloss first and then add lip liner (2 shades darker) for some dimension then re-apply the gloss to finish off the look.

Celebrity Beauty On Set

On Set with Martin Short & Steve Martin

Myself and my team member Nicole had the pleasure of working with Martin Short and Steve Martin recently on two separate occasions.

This is the third time I personally have had the pleasure to work with Martin Short, and the first time with Steve Martin! These two comedy legends are an absolute pleasure to work with. They have been friends for 30 years, and their secret to a lasting friendship? Laughter!

So many people ask me how it is to work with Martin Short, and my response is always that he’s hilarious even when I’m doing his makeup! My mother actually grew up with him and my great grandmother babysat him, so my family has a long history with him. I’ll never forget the second time I did his makeup and I asked him to take a picture with me. I said to Marty: what should we do in the photo? He said “Well, you should do my makeup!” We laughed and laughed and this was the photo that was captured:

Martin Short and Steve Martin were interviewed for a 60 Minutes Australia feature where I did their makeup on stage after their sound check. I had the pleasure to be able to sit in on for awhile, and prior to their stage show “Now You See Them, Soon You Won’t” later that evening.

It was a makeup application where I had to do everything on stage prior to their interview, so I spritzed their faces with Glo Skin Beauty hydration mist to quickly prep. I then held my Glo Skin Beauty therapeutic makeup palette and powder brush for a quick and easy application with enough coverage to make them look flawless. I followed this by a quick brow and concealer application and scurried off the stage. Nicole then did their makeup on location for the second day of interviews.
