Winterizing Your Foundation

‘Winterizing’ your foundation for the colder months is a thing! When doing our client’s makeup during these winter months, we always keep in mind that with their skin being more susceptible to dehydration & dryness throughout the day, it’s always good to take preventative measures to make it look more luminous. That can include changing your foundation in the winter months versus sticking to your same foundation all-year round!

For someone who typically has oily skin in the summer, it’s not out of the ordinary to have really dry skin in the winter depending on your environment (due to heaters, lifestyle, location & environment). A foundation that will make your skin glow will usually have light-refracting technology that makes it appear extra radiant, but will also have added hydration to go hand-in-hand with your winter moisturizer. Here are some of our favourite foundations that you can use in winter (that you might not use in the summer depending on your skin-type!) to help your skin look amazing.

Light coverage:

For a no-makeup-makeup dewy finish, the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Natural Skin Perfector is a great option. It’s border-line skincare with spf 30 that’s needed in the winter months as well! It is described as a ‘Hydrating Complex made up of Macadamia and Kukui Seed Oils that helps increase the skin’s moisture levels long-term for 24 hours of hydration, while reducing the signs of visibly dry skin’.

Medium coverage:

Tarte’s ‘Shape-Tape’ Hydrating Gel foundation is very luminous, buildable & oil free (yes you can get hydration from an oil free foundation too), with hyaluronic acid and collagen that work to plump and smooth the skin!

Lastly, for a more full coverage hydrating foundation I love the Nars Natural Radiant Long-wear Foundation. The name says it all! How to Spice Up Your Staff Appreciation Night

The Beauty Team transformed Imperial Tobacco employees into the Spice Girls and other celebs for a super fun lip sync battle!

We’ve already touched on how you can make your employee appreciation night extra special by providing pampering services like hairstyling, makeup, manicures and massages… but what if you want to take it to the next level and REALLY delight your team? How about an EPIC LIP SYNC BATTLE?! Honestly, this was one of the most fun events we’ve ever been a part of so we thought we’d share it with you in case you’re inspired to do something similar for your team.

Imperial Tobacco recently hosted a staff appreciation event at Toronto’s Hotel X. Over 400 of their staff members were invited for an evening of appreciation and pampering, and the event planners at Zeste Incentive hired The Beauty Team to help make the event one to remember. But we didn’t stop there! The Beauty Team was also enlisted for the after party at Rebel Nightclub, where we provided hair, makeup and wardrobe styling for a super fun lip sync battle. We created celebrity looks inspired by Grease, 50 Cent, the Spice Girls, Beyonce and more, with customized props, wigs and costumes that blew everyone away! How fun is that?!

We know the question on everyone’s minds… how the heck to you transform a group of regular folks into the Spice Girls? Here are some pro tips from one of our talented makeup artists to get you started (thanks Nicole!):

Pop stars are known for wearing bold makeup colours, which look great on stage. Liquid lipstick (we like MAC) is a great base for eyeshadow if you really want it to stand out. Plus, they’re creamy and easy to blend.
You also want to use an eye colour base so the bold colours don’t transfer onto the skin (try Mac’s 24-hour Eye Base).
Layering is key. After applying your eye colour base, then your creamy eye colour, set it all with a powder so it stands the test of sweaty dancing and hot stage lights.
If you don’t use a setting powder, try a good sealer like Green Marble, which is popular among theatre performers.
Exaggerating features helps you take on a celebrity’s look as well, so use lots of highlighting and contouring to mimic the celeb’s facial features. This also works very well for the stage because it’s easier to see from afar.
Glitter can be fun! It catches the light nicely and won’t look too dramatic on stage.
When it comes to lashes… GO BIG or GO HOME! They open up the eyes and make them stand out for the crowd.

Conair Infiniti Pro Straightener – Pro or No?

Our hair expert and OUAI Canadian Educator, Alysse, tested out the Conair Infiniti Pro Straightener and we just had to ask her about it!

Here are her answers:

Q: What are your favourite features of this product?

A: The number one thing was that it heated up quickly and was simple to use! I personally loved how it left some movement in my hair as opposed to making it pin straight and lifeless. My models also loved how it didn’t pull and made their hair feel silky and shiny.

Q: Who would you recommend this product to?

A: I would recommend this product to a variety of hair types however, if you have very kinky roots this product is not for you. The straightener doesn’t get close enough to smooth them out. I would say the target market is the girl on-the-go. It heats up quickly and smooths out hair giving you a polished look in minutes.

Q: Would you use this on a daily basis?

A: I would definitely use this on a daily basis. It’s always good to have easy-to-use products on hand to make mornings less stressful! Not to mention, if it makes my models happy I really can’t complain!

Q: Overall, do you give this product your stamp of approval?

A: Yes! It surprised me. I didn’t think I would like it as much as I did! I would definitely recommend trying the Conair Infiniti Pro Straightener.

Dior’s blogger event

On August 19th we were invited to Dior’s blogger event in Toronto. Beauty Team Makeup Artist, Justine Sly joined us and shares her experience and product reviews below. Enjoy!

I had the opportunity to attended Dior’s blogger event in Toronto and couldn’t have had a better time – not only did I get to learn some great tips from Anne Marie Van Meer, the education manager and Makeup Artist for Dior , I even got to have a little pampering myself with a Dior manicure!

While receiving my Manicure, I learned about one of Dior’s best selling products and my new favourite nail polish: Nail Glow. This product strengthens and smooths the nail and makes the pink of your nail pinker and the white tip whiter giving you the most perfect and fresh French tip.

What I can not live without is Dior’s rosy glow blush. Rosy glow has fresh colour reveal: a technology that is intended to adjust to your colouring to develop a rosy radiance to match your skin tone. I love it because it works on every one! A staple to have in any Makeup Artist’s kit.

Blush tip : Add a little bit of your Dior rosy glow blush into the crease of your eye for that extra lift and pop of colour.

Lip glow has the same effect by enhancing your natural lip colour. It is also extremely hydrating – it’s great for the gym or even a day at the office. For a more glammed up look try lip glow with the lip maximize which has collagen to make the lips plump and fuller.

Sante Natural Cosmetics

The Beauty Team is excited to send some of our talented Makeup Artists out to work in pharmacies, natural/organic stores and events with a unique cosmetic brand such as Sante Naturkosmetik.

The entire facial make-up line is developed and manufactured in Germany and meets the strict criteria for Certified Natural Cosmetics (according BDIH) with the exception of the Nail Polish. These purely plant sourced products offer palettes of pure colours derived from nature and are infused with Organic Jojoba and Chamomile. They not only glide on like butter but they smell sweet and fresh. To tell you the truth the products smell better than some of our most favourite body butters or fragrances!

Sante is geared towards (but not limited to) a young, fresh and trendy clientele and is great for sensitive skin. The products are innovative and offered at an affordable price point (all priced under $30.00).

Cosmetic companies are definitely recognizing that customer’s read ingredients and are very educated about what they put on their skin. We’re loving that this line offers some gluten-free and vegan options and that all of their products are not tested on animals. We will definitely be recommending this line to clients with sensitivities and specific ingredient requirements.

We were lucky enough to sample a few products from this Natural Makeup line and look forward to sharing our reviews with our readers in the next few weeks.

So far our favourite products from the line are the Pressed Powder because of its ability to melt into the skin, even out skintone and add a healthy glow. Truthfully, what got us was the fresh scent. Who knew a natural product could smell so good!? We are also loving Sante Lipsticks which have great opacity, moisturize, protect and are available in a wide array of 24 shades.

Over all these made in Germany products are good quality and high in pigment. We do believe their range of colour is good, but would like to see a few more brighter shades as they attract the eye and always look great on the skin.

This line already has a big following especially by customers that are aware of healthy cosmetic ingredients and we applaud and appreciate them for that!

The Beauty Team is grateful to be able to try out new Dior cosmetics ‘hot off the press’ for fall 2013!

The new collection is breathtaking! The 5 colour palette of shadows is shimmery and mythical. The colour harmonies exist in shades blue-green and browns (384 Bonne Etoile) and are hot tones for runway fall 2013.

What we love is the way the new line of eyeshadows compliment the new lip shades. The deep plum hue of Dior’s Bonne Aventure paired with Ensorcelante gloss will create a dramatic and classy look that the Beauty Team is more than excited to use especially for print and bridal clients.

Application: Soft or Bold.

Soft: applied with fingertips, the eye shadow melts into the skin to create a light veil of colour and a subtly shimmering result.

Bold: applied using the smudging applicator, the finish is intensified to reveal pure and extreme colour.

Last, the new Dior manicure makes your look stand out with a shadowy blue lacquer which, owing to its integrated magnet, reveals an enigmatic motif. Redness Relief Alert!

So it’s summer and we all are guilty of some slight sun burn, I’m sure. I have a solution that will soothe the skin, take down your redness and actually hydrate. Who knew a powder would actually work as an after-sun aid? I first used this magic powder on set for Deck Wars for HGTV Canada. I always tell people the funny story about how the host of the show didn’t understand why his makeup wasn’t coming off his nose at the end of the night after a long season of filming. I remember Paul saying to me “Jenna, I wash my face and my nose doesn’t have it’s usual redness, why is this?” I laughed because it wasn’t that his makeup wasn’t coming off with his regular cleanser, it was because the product was actually helping to heal his rosacea . Product Review – Diorskin Nude BB Creme

I must admit I was not on the bandwagon when BB cremes hit the shelves a few years ago. I preferred applying my tinted moisturizers, serums and primers individually and didn’t really get the hype.

It wasn’t until I was sent Diorskin Nude BB creme that my perception changed. Enhanced with mineralized floral water, a blend of antioxidants and SPF 10, this product promises to moisturize, correct and protect the skin from the outdoor elements.

I first applied this product with my Beauty Blender and it literally blurred all imperfections and gave me a radiant glow while not feeling like I had anything on my face. My skin looked flawless!

A little goes a long way with this product. Start with less and add more as needed. If you start with too much product it tends to take a long time to dry. The best way to apply it is like I did (with a Beauty Blender) or your fingertips (freshly washed of course) as I found when I used a foundation brush it looked a bit heavy.

A definite recommendation to any woman on the go.

The BB creme comes in 4 shades and is suitable for all skin tones. Available at your nearest department store or Sephora.
