Wedding Feature in Elegant Wedding Magazine Spring 2020

March 11, 2020

Last summer in late July, we had the pleasure to work with Samantha who definitely tops our list as one of the sweetest clients we’ve worked with! Our hair and makeup team travelled to Oakville to get Sam and her bridal party ready for her big day. The ceremony was taking place at St. Andrew Church, where Sam would arrive in her grandfather’s ‘61 Thunderbird. The reception would then take place in downtown Toronto, at the gorgeous boutique hotel venue, One King West. Samantha is also a talented jewelry designer, and designed her wedding bands, and bridal party’s jewelry as well! You can check out her work here.

We were so excited to hear that the wedding was finally featured in last month’s issue of Elegant Wedding magazine and wanted to share it with everyone! Weddings truly take a village to plan and execute, and we absolutely love seeing everything come together so beautifully. Congratulations again Samantha and Brad! We can’t wait to glam you up again soon!

Winterizing Your Foundation

January 27, 2020

‘Winterizing’ your foundation for the colder months is a thing! When doing our client’s makeup during these winter months, we always keep in mind that with their skin being more susceptible to dehydration & dryness throughout the day, it’s always good to take preventative measures to make it look more luminous. That can include changing your foundation in the winter months versus sticking to your same foundation all-year round!

For someone who typically has oily skin in the summer, it’s not out of the ordinary to have really dry skin in the winter depending on your environment (due to heaters, lifestyle, location & environment). A foundation that will make your skin glow will usually have light-refracting technology that makes it appear extra radiant, but will also have added hydration to go hand-in-hand with your winter moisturizer. Here are some of our favourite foundations that you can use in winter (that you might not use in the summer depending on your skin-type!) to help your skin look amazing.

Light coverage:

For a no-makeup-makeup dewy finish, the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Natural Skin Perfector is a great option. It’s border-line skincare with spf 30 that’s needed in the winter months as well! It is described as a ‘Hydrating Complex made up of Macadamia and Kukui Seed Oils that helps increase the skin’s moisture levels long-term for 24 hours of hydration, while reducing the signs of visibly dry skin’.

Medium coverage:

Tarte’s ‘Shape-Tape’ Hydrating Gel foundation is very luminous, buildable & oil free (yes you can get hydration from an oil free foundation too), with hyaluronic acid and collagen that work to plump and smooth the skin!

Full coverage:

Lastly, for a more full coverage hydrating foundation I love the Nars Natural Radiant Long-wear Foundation. The name says it all! Nars claims that 91% of women agree that their skin appears smoother while wearing the foundation.Enjoy extra-hydrated skin for these last few winter months and you’ll see the difference. To book a private lesson or a makeup appointment with The Beauty Team, email us at: info@thebeautyteam.ca or click here and we will treat your skin to the best foundation for your skin type and give you more tips for ‘winterizing’ your very own foundation.

The making of Spirit Animals at NightShift WR !

November 17, 2014

The Beauty Team started off November with the opportunity to be a part of Kitchener’s second Night Shift 2014 event! The event is a nuit blanche-style festival of art, culture and nocturnal adventure!

image

We had a lot of fun executing creative makeup looks on the models from Gemini. Special thanks to JVT Photography for beautifully capturing these photos.

image

This particular look was spirit animal inspired, and I just put my own spin on it! I used a TON of feathers and applied them with lash glue. The rest of the face I mainly used the MAKE UP FOR EVER Flash palette to create the fur like makeup.

image

BeautyNote:
Always set liquid or cream makeup with powder so you don’t get creasing or smudging!

image

Makeup Artist, Krys (thebeautyteam.) also created some amazing spirit animal looks, with really defined contours and brows!

Night shift 2014 was such a fun evening bringing out our inner creativity with these Avant Guard looks! We hope to be a part of this fabulous annual event next year!

How to Block Brows like the pros.

October 30, 2014

You will need:

  • Spoolie Brush
  • Metal Spatula
  • Spirit Gum + Spirit Gum Remover
  • Wax
  • Castor Sealer
  • Sponges
  • Concealer

Please note that when using Spirit Gum you will also need to purchase the Spirit Gum Remover! Be gentle when removing and remember to cleanse and moisturize the skin once all the product is removed.

                        images-1  images-7

Step 1:

Using a spoolie brush, comb brows downwards and coat with spirit gum. Proceed to brush them upwards adding a bit more product as needed. Flatten brows as much as possible. Once the spirit gum starts to become tacky, continue to flatten the brows by lightly pressing a metal spatula into the skin moving in an upward direction.

Step 2:

NWtn

Proceed with a wax. Take off a very small piece, warm it up with your finger tips and roll into a small ball. Smooth this overtop of the already flattened brow and use the same technique with the spatula (as discussed in Step 1).

Step 3:

bncastor

Apply a sealer with a wedge sponge over top of the wax. Once evenly coated, absorb any moisture with transluscent powder and a powder puff. The sealer insures the makeup application will provide the proper finish and prevents discolouration of your concealer.

Step 4:

Layer concealer in a stippling motion over top of the brow ( I like to use a Beauty Blender for better coverage). Start by color correcting with a yellow tone to neutralize the darkness of your natural brow. Continue to layer with a concealer that’s your skin tone (or tone desired depending on the look you want to achieve) until the brows are completely blocked out. Set with transluscent powder.

5 steps to the best brows – à la Cara Delevingne

September 5, 2013

Let’s face it, we all swoon for brows like Supermodel Cara Delevingne. Eyebrows shape your eye makeup, bring out your eye colour and add that extra ‘pop’  to any eye shape. As Makeup Artists, we are often asked: What is the best way to create the perfect eyebrow!?

caradelevingneCaraDelevingne

The following are our 5 tips and tricks that will get you that celeb worthy brow in no time!

1.)  SHAPE. First lets make sure your eyebrows start, arch and end at the right spots. Hold a slanted eyebrow brush (or a pencil, anything straight) from the side of your nose straight up. This is where your eyebrow should begin. For the Arch, hold the brush from the side of the nose to the end of the iris, this is where your eyebrow should arch. Last, hold your brush from the side of the nose to the end of the eye, and this is where the eyebrow should end. If your eyebrow is short or thin in any of these areas, lets fix it to look fuller and longer! If you need to tweeze get your tweezerman tweezers out but don’t go overboard!

eyebrowtweeze

2.) TOOLS and COLOUR. Now depending on how much ‘work’ your eyebrows need depends on what tool or eyebrow makeup you will use. If your eyebrow is full and the shape is good, you can get away with using a slanted eyebrow brush. Make sure the  brush isn’t too thin – the thinner, denser brushes make the eyebrows look too harsh. If you do accidentally apply too much product to your brows a great way to tone it down is to use either a clean mascara wand or a brush with a grooming spool on the opposite end.  A great eyebrow brush with a grooming spool on the other end is Lise Watier’s , retailing for CA$18.00  at many Shopper Drug Mart stores.

lwbrush

Eyebrow colour is very important. There are many eyebrow shadows out there that are too red or orange and unatural looking for most people. Here are some great eyebrow shadows with great undertones:

Try Glominerals brow powder duos.  For brunettes use ‘Brown’, for blondes use ‘Taupe’, for  auburn hair tones try ‘Auburn’ and for strawberry blondes try Glominerals ‘Blonde’ brow powder duo.  This brand has great tones for a true natural looking eyebrow.

globrow-powder-duo-shadesglobrown

Another favourite of ours is Yaby’s brow powder a great choice, vegan friendly and perfectly pigmented for all brow shades – even red-heads! Best of all it’s compact and budget friendly – only $5.45 per colour! An essential in any Makeup Artist’s brow grooming kit.

yabybrowpowder

3.  PENCIL –   Next, if your eyebrows need a lot of ‘filling’ and powder may not do the trick we recommend either using a thin eyebrow pencil with a good tone.

Try using Dior’s Universal Brow pencil.

What it is:
Dior’s backstage inspired, ultra-fine precision brow pencil.

What it does:
This ultra-fine retractable pencil and brush provide simple and quick brow shaping. One universal shade works for any hair color or skintone for easily filling in and defining brows, creating a natural and polished or daring and dramatic look.

What else you need to know:
The retractable pencil does not require sharpening. The brush on the opposite side neatly sweeps brow hairs into place.

diorbrow

4.  WAX – Or a wax with an eyebrow shadow on top. These measures will keep your eyebrows looking full and in place even if they are not. We love Smashbox brow tech trio

What it is:

An innovative powder and wax trio that combines everything you need for perfectly polished brows.

smash

5.)  FINISH THE LOOK. Lastly, there is a trick to make your brows last longer and look naturel and that is to set them LIGHTLY with a true mineral translucent or foundation powder (make sure there is no talc in the powder or it will make the eyebrows look ashy!). Lightly dip your kabuki brush or powder brush into your product and add it on top of your brows. A true mineral powder, like Glominerals will melt the brow colour into the skin for an ever-so-soft look.  SKIP THIS STEP IF YOU HAVE USED WAX OR PENCIL ON THE BROW AS THE POWDER MAY STICK TOO MUCH TO THE BROW.

Pair these tips with a bold berry lip and you’re officially ‘brow’ ready for fall!

Oily Skin Saviour – FACE Atelier’s Ultra Matte

August 13, 2013

After overhearing a few great reviews about FACE Atelier’s Ultra Matte I decided to try out what was (soon to be) a new staple in my Makeup Kit.

Ultra Matte is perfect for oily skinned clientele as it not only reduces shine but also preserves makeup for long lasting flawless results.  I love this product for HD television and commercial work because unlike powder, Ultra Matte won’t build-up and is undetecable by the most sophisticated HD technology.

This Matte mist is celeb approved. Kelly Clarkson was first introduced to FACE Atelier’s Ultra Matte while on tour and quoted ” it’s the first tour I’ve done without sweating my makeup off! “

face-atelier-ultra-matte

Ultra Matte is the first ever silicone-based spray mattifier that allows you to banish shine before, during and after makeup application without dulling the skin. The revolutionary formula contains optical blurring ingredients that minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

Sensitive clients can rest assured that Ultra Matte is Fragrance free – non comedogenic and 100% vegan.  Please be sure to ask if your client is allergic to silicone as this is the base ingredient in this product.

 To use:

* Apply before makeup to a freshly face (after cleansing and moisturizing).

* Hold the bottle about 12 inches away from the face when spraying.

* Allow about 8-10 minutes to really see the full effect.

* For extremely oily skin (or areas) reapply once makeup is applied to set the look.

Ultra Matte retails for $40 (ca).

Available at select retail locations as well as online at FACE Atelier (if you’re a Makeup Artist don’t forget to sign up for The Preferred Pro Program ).

Getting our glo on with Kate McCarthy

August 8, 2013

On July 30th we were honoured to meet such an inspirational Makeup Artist as Kate McCarthy  International Makeup Artist for Glominerals.

new bio pic

We were grateful to get some time to talk with such a charismatic and multi-faceted artist with the same passion for the industry as Victoria and I have. Having done some work in LA and working with celebrities Kate discussed the ups and downs she faced when working in such a challenging environment. To hear how she got to where she is now is truly an inspiration.

We at The Beauty Team share the same excitement about glominerals as Kate having used the makeup at photoshoots, television gigs and even on bridal and corporate clients across SouthWestern Ontario.

Jenna being a Glo educator and Makeup Artist for Glominerals, the both of us owning a Beauty Team (where we preach about the brand to our team and to all of our clients), along with working in television and print, we were most excited to hear how Kate grew to love this prestige brand.  She began the workshop by telling the story of how she once visited a dermatologist who told her she needed to change her skin care routine due to some acne issues and was introduced to Glominerals. She was so obsessed with how amazing the product made her skin look that she wanted to figure out how to work for the company. She called the company multiple times and in her cute and quirky way said she actually slightly ‘bugged’ them until she got a job. She now trains women around the world on the benefits of glomineral makeup. Talk about an inspiration,  Kate is also the product developer for the brand!

gloworkshop4

We admire the way Kate presents herself and the product. With pride, flare and humour. She made the event fun and all the attendees who were staff at medical spas had nothing but amazing feedback about the training session.

Here is Kate doing a demo: half cat eye, half smokey eye:

glo workshop

Fun Facts:

A self proclaimed Cat lover,  Kate named one of Glominerals lip liners after her cat Delilah.

One of her all time favourite brushes is the eye texture brush.

As fellow Makeup Artist’s we cannot stress how important it is to blend, blend blend! Kate agrees admitting to having over 8 eye blender brushes in her brush roll.

A great new tip; To keep eyeliner fully waterproof, set with Glo’s clear lip filler.

Before and After: Joanne

June 14, 2013

Joanne:

Age: 32

Occupation:  Television host

Working in the media as a Television Host, Joanne is constantly on the go. She needed a look that is classic, on trend and easy to achieve on her own.

joanne1

Makeup:

Joanne has great blue eyes, loves to play them up and isn’t scared of a little makeup.  First things first, to ensure her look would last from day to night, I primed her eyes with Urban Decay’s primer potion followed by cool tones of eyeshadow from Stila’s “In the Know” palette which coordinated perfectly with her outfits. I wanted  to draw extra attention to the eyes and  did so by lining them (inside and out) with a black waterproof liner by Dior.

Stila - in the know palette

dior - black waterproof liner

I evened out her skin using FACE ateliers ultra foundation in Ivory and highlighted key area’s including under eyes, bridge of nose, centre of her chin using  Dior’s skin flash radiance booster pen in Roseglow

FACE atelier Ultra Foundation

dior - radiance booster pen - rose glow

To tie the look together I applied  Nars multiple in Riviera, a true pink cream blush to her cheeks which gave her a youthful and luminous glow.

nars multiple -riviera

Lastly, to pair with her outgoing personality and girly style I applied a custom blend of a pink Revlon shade (color unknown as it came in a palette) followed by a Raspberry gloss, Penny Arcade by NARS.

nars - larger then life gloss - penny arcade

Hair:

With her gorgeous long hair and it only felt right to give Joanne some big loose waves. To achieve this look Evita sectioned the hair into four parts and wrapped it around a 2 inch curling iron. She sprayed the hair with a bit of Icon – DONE finishing spray and let it sit for about 10 minutes.  After everything was set  she ran a Large Paddle brush over the curls to make it loose and wavy. She then applied a dime size of styling paste to give the curls a bit of definition and added shine.

Behind the scenes of our first Before and After shoot

June 7, 2013

Back in April, The Beauty Team paired up with Styled Sihouettes  and Julia Park Photography to shoot our first ever Before and After’s  before our official site launch.

A lot of our private clients are busy working women so we thought this would be a great way to showcase our team’s talents in a photo shoot situation (as oppose to getting them ready for an event and then ‘off they go’).  This also gives people an idea of what a little hair, makeup and a professional image consultant can do! Using our pro techniques and go-to products we helped to accentuate our model’s best features making them look polished and professional for the workplace and everyday life.

The latest addition to The Beauty Notes is our Before and After section. We will keep our readers up-to-date with our latest makeovers.

Donuts and Makeup!

Donuts and Makeup!

The mouth watering and highly entertaining Donut Showdown on The Food Network Canada began on April 2nd 2013!

images

It’s 7am and Victoria Fedosoff,  Maggie Ng and I (Jenna Sardo) set up our makeup stations to get the 4 fantastic talent ready for a wild day of donut judging!

First things first: we never forgot to matify the talent’s faces with both Pur Minerals oil control gel and Lise Watier or Urban Decay eye primer! The hot lights and detailed HD world will not be forgiving for us makeup wizards. We never went a day without these products because we knew we would be squirming with frustration behind the camera if we ever saw shine on our talent’s faces!

images-3

Our second ‘must-have’ item was blotting powders! In the 30 seconds we had (not even) to run in and blot the judges faces to make sure they looked spectacular we didn’t have the time or the patience for a blotting powder that we couldn’t rely on 100 percent! This led Victoria and I to make sure we used one of 3 of these high performance blotting powders:

Pur Minerals ‘Balancing Act Oil Control Powder’

pur minerals

Glo Minerals rice starch oil absorbing powder in ‘matte’ and ‘perfecting powder’

glo minerals pp

Cover FX blot powders in light and medium.

cccc

We definitely loved to bronze our talent! We only used Hula bronzer by Benefit for the men and Glo minerals bronzers in Sunkiss and Sunlight! These bronzers do not turn orange with the temperature and acidity of the skin and looked thin and flawless all day long.

hoola

My go-to lipstick for Judge Maggie McKewon (Recipe to Riches and….) was Dior’s Rouge Dior #555 Dolce Vita Pink or Nars’ ‘Niagara’.

dior rougeNARS Niagara

The stay-in-place and trustworthy eyeliner I would rely on was either Dior’s ‘black waterproof’ or Mac’s ‘Engraved’. I always set this eyeliner with Makeup Forever’s dark brown eyeshadown in matte espresso #166.

The Set was so fun on Donut Showdown. Donuts, Makeup, lots of laughs, good company and cafe mochas! Who could ask for more?!

This season of Donut Showdown has wrapped but stay tuned for rerun’s Tuesday’s at 11pm on The Food Network Canada!
