2015 Met Ball Beauty

May 5, 2015

The 2015 Met Ball was held Monday in New York. This years theme was China: Through the Looking Glass. Here are some stand out beauty looks (and products) from the night.

Rihanna’s gown and stunning headpiece were perfectly complimented by her Makeup. Mylah Morales created her look with an Asian-inspired color palette (lots of pinks) and used blush on both her eyes and lips. The focus of the look were her bold brows. She used Diorshow Brow Styler (one of our faves) to define and groom.

Selena Gomez went for a sexy and sophisticated look with a sleek updo, dark red lips, a smokey cat eye and lots of lashes to really emphasize the drama.

Kendall Jenner – the face of Estee Lauder – showed up with defined brows, dewy skin and a sleek wing liner. To achieve the wing, Kendall’s makeup artist used Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Zero-Smudge Liquid Eyeliner in Black and defined her long lashes with Little Black Primer. To create those bold brows, the Automatic Brow Pencil was applied and finished off with a pink pout by applying Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Insatiable Ivory all over her lips.

Cara Delevingne made a statement with her full sleeve faux body art, nude lips and some seriously sexy smokey eyes.

All hail the Queen Bee – Beyoncé – when it comes to any appearance, her makeup is always flawless and coordinates with the clothes she wears. This year at the 2015 Met Ball, Beyoncé wore only affordable makeup that you can get at your nearest drug store… and yes, we do mean L’Oreal!

To create Beyonce’s mod eye, her makeup artist used a mix of L’Oreal Paris Infallible Eye Shadows in Endless Sea and Infinite Sky ($8.00) which stood out beautifully against her sun kissed skin. She finished off the look with the Voluminous Miss Manga Mascara in black.

Who were your favourite looks at this years Met Ball?

Dior Tie Dye Manicure top coat

May 4, 2015

Summer is a great time to get creative with nail designs. Adding a bit of glitter of different colours will add a whole new dimension to your outfit. That’s why Dior has created a translucent grenadine-coloured topcoat that adds sheens of tie-dye colouring to your nails.

You can apply the topcoat to your bare nails or on top of a nail polish. We recommend pairing it with the Dior Vernis it-shades in ‘ sunwashed’ or ‘sunkissed’ both creating the perfect pair. We also love applying it to bare nails because it enhances the natural pink of the nail plus adding a wave of ultra-shiny, translucent colours.

Summer is just around the corner so get your bright colours out and have fun painting!

5 steps to the best brows – à la Cara Delevingne

September 5, 2013

Let’s face it, we all swoon for brows like Supermodel Cara Delevingne. Eyebrows shape your eye makeup, bring out your eye colour and add that extra ‘pop’  to any eye shape. As Makeup Artists, we are often asked: What is the best way to create the perfect eyebrow!?

The following are our 5 tips and tricks that will get you that celeb worthy brow in no time!

1.)  SHAPE. First lets make sure your eyebrows start, arch and end at the right spots. Hold a slanted eyebrow brush (or a pencil, anything straight) from the side of your nose straight up. This is where your eyebrow should begin. For the Arch, hold the brush from the side of the nose to the end of the iris, this is where your eyebrow should arch. Last, hold your brush from the side of the nose to the end of the eye, and this is where the eyebrow should end. If your eyebrow is short or thin in any of these areas, lets fix it to look fuller and longer! If you need to tweeze get your tweezerman tweezers out but don’t go overboard!

2.) TOOLS and COLOUR. Now depending on how much ‘work’ your eyebrows need depends on what tool or eyebrow makeup you will use. If your eyebrow is full and the shape is good, you can get away with using a slanted eyebrow brush. Make sure the  brush isn’t too thin – the thinner, denser brushes make the eyebrows look too harsh. If you do accidentally apply too much product to your brows a great way to tone it down is to use either a clean mascara wand or a brush with a grooming spool on the opposite end.  A great eyebrow brush with a grooming spool on the other end is Lise Watier’s , retailing for CA$18.00  at many Shopper Drug Mart stores.

Eyebrow colour is very important. There are many eyebrow shadows out there that are too red or orange and unatural looking for most people. Here are some great eyebrow shadows with great undertones:

Try Glominerals brow powder duos.  For brunettes use ‘Brown’, for blondes use ‘Taupe’, for  auburn hair tones try ‘Auburn’ and for strawberry blondes try Glominerals ‘Blonde’ brow powder duo.  This brand has great tones for a true natural looking eyebrow.

Another favourite of ours is Yaby’s brow powder a great choice, vegan friendly and perfectly pigmented for all brow shades – even red-heads! Best of all it’s compact and budget friendly – only $5.45 per colour! An essential in any Makeup Artist’s brow grooming kit.

3.  PENCIL –   Next, if your eyebrows need a lot of ‘filling’ and powder may not do the trick we recommend either using a thin eyebrow pencil with a good tone.

Try using Dior’s Universal Brow pencil.

What it is:
Dior’s backstage inspired, ultra-fine precision brow pencil.

What it does:
This ultra-fine retractable pencil and brush provide simple and quick brow shaping. One universal shade works for any hair color or skintone for easily filling in and defining brows, creating a natural and polished or daring and dramatic look.

What else you need to know:
The retractable pencil does not require sharpening. The brush on the opposite side neatly sweeps brow hairs into place.

4.  WAX – Or a wax with an eyebrow shadow on top. These measures will keep your eyebrows looking full and in place even if they are not. We love Smashbox brow tech trio

What it is:

An innovative powder and wax trio that combines everything you need for perfectly polished brows.

5.)  FINISH THE LOOK. Lastly, there is a trick to make your brows last longer and look naturel and that is to set them LIGHTLY with a true mineral translucent or foundation powder (make sure there is no talc in the powder or it will make the eyebrows look ashy!). Lightly dip your kabuki brush or powder brush into your product and add it on top of your brows. A true mineral powder, like Glominerals will melt the brow colour into the skin for an ever-so-soft look.  SKIP THIS STEP IF YOU HAVE USED WAX OR PENCIL ON THE BROW AS THE POWDER MAY STICK TOO MUCH TO THE BROW.

Pair these tips with a bold berry lip and you’re officially ‘brow’ ready for fall!

Dior’s blogger event

August 22, 2013

On August 19th we were invited to Dior’s blogger event in Toronto. Beauty Team Makeup Artist,  Justine Sly joined us and shares her experience and product reviews below. Enjoy!

I had the opportunity to attended Dior’s blogger event in Toronto and couldn’t have had a better time – not only did I get to learn some great tips from Anne Marie Van Meer, the education manager and Makeup Artist for Dior , I even got to have a little pampering myself with a Dior manicure!

IToronto-20130819-00046nail glow

While receiving my Manicure, I learned about one of Dior’s best selling products and my new favourite nail polish: Nail Glow. This product strengthens and smooths the nail and makes the pink of your nail pinker and the white tip whiter giving you the most perfect and fresh French tip.

What I can not live without is Dior’s rosy glow blush. Rosy glow has fresh colour reveal: a technology that is intended to adjust to your colouring to develop a rosy radiance to match your skin tone. I love it because it works on every one! A staple to have in any Makeup Artist’s kit.

Blush tip : Add a little bit of your Dior rosy glow blush into the crease of your eye for that extra lift and pop of colour.

lip glow

Lip glow has the same effect by enhancing your natural lip colour. It is also extremely hydrating – it’s great for the gym or even a day at the office. For a more glammed up look try lip glow with the lip maximize which has collagen to make the lips plump and fuller.

These are just some of the many amazing products that Dior has to offer.

Stay tuned for more information on how you can sign up for Dior’s exclusive Backstage Pro Workshop’s happening at The Bay Sept 4th-8th, 2013. Customers will get to try Dior’s star products and learn some backstage tips and tricks from top Dior Beauty Experts.

We hope you can make it to one of the workshops and fall in love with these products as much as The Beauty Team has!

DIOR Mystic Metallics – sneak peek at fall 2013

July 28, 2013

The Beauty Team  is grateful to be able to try out new Dior cosmetics ‘hot off the press’ for fall 2013!

On the counter in August!

The new collection is breathtaking! The 5 colour palette of shadows is shimmery and mythical. The colour harmonies exist in shades blue-green and browns (384 Bonne Etoile) and are hot tones for runway fall 2013.

What we love is the way the new line of eyeshadows compliment the new lip shades.  The deep plum hue of  Dior’s Bonne Aventure paired with Ensorcelante gloss will create a dramatic and classy look that the Beauty Team is  more than excited to use especially for print and bridal clients.

Tyen states: “The colour harmonies that I have created for this look reflect the mysterious colours of the galaxy. Like a journey from the earth to the moon.”

The Diorshow Fusion Mono creates the depth and contrast of a catwalk look. Its unprecedented, rounded, gel-mousse texture weightlessly illuminates the eye with multi-faceted, long lasting colour! With Diorshow Fushion Mono, Dior has created the first multi dimensional light and shadow eye look.

Eyes ‘dress up in the dazzle of black diamonds, of amber…’ Eight shades with intense shimmer and a powerful emotional charge!

Application: Soft or Bold.

Soft: applied with fingertips, the eye shadow melts into the skin to create a light veil of colour and a subtly shimmering result.

Bold: applied using the smudging applicator, the finish is intensified to reveal pure and extreme colour.

Last, the new Dior manicure makes your look stand out with a shadowy blue lacquer which, owing to its integrated magnet, reveals an enigmatic motif.  Shimmering lights of silvery pink (382 Destin) and brocade prune (992 Galaxie) propel nail lacquer into a new dimension, for a half-shadow, half-light aesthetic that is always stylish!

The Beauty Team has been blown away by the buttery-smooth texture of Dior nail polish.  What makes it unique is the luxurious applicator that gives a just-out-of the-spa look that we all love!

Thanks Dior.  Fall has never looked so good!

On Set

Before and After: Joanne

June 14, 2013

Age: 32

Occupation:  Television host

Working in the media as a Television Host, Joanne is constantly on the go. She needed a look that is classic, on trend and easy to achieve on her own.

Joanne has great blue eyes, loves to play them up and isn’t scared of a little makeup.  First things first, to ensure her look would last from day to night, I primed her eyes with Urban Decay’s primer potion followed by cool tones of eyeshadow from Stila’s “In the Know” palette which coordinated perfectly with her outfits. I wanted  to draw extra attention to the eyes and  did so by lining them (inside and out) with a black waterproof liner by Dior.

Stila - in the know palette

dior - black waterproof liner

I evened out her skin using FACE ateliers ultra foundation in Ivory and highlighted key area’s including under eyes, bridge of nose, centre of her chin using  Dior’s skin flash radiance booster pen in Roseglow

FACE atelier Ultra Foundation

To tie the look together I applied  Nars multiple in Riviera, a true pink cream blush to her cheeks which gave her a youthful and luminous glow.

Lastly, to pair with her outgoing personality and girly style I applied a custom blend of a pink Revlon shade (color unknown as it came in a palette) followed by a Raspberry gloss, Penny Arcade by NARS.

nars - larger then life gloss - penny arcade

With her gorgeous long hair and it only felt right to give Joanne some big loose waves. To achieve this look Evita sectioned the hair into four parts and wrapped it around a 2 inch curling iron. She sprayed the hair with a bit of Icon – DONE finishing spray and let it sit for about 10 minutes.  After everything was set  she ran a Large Paddle brush over the curls to make it loose and wavy. She then applied a dime size of styling paste to give the curls a bit of definition and added shine.
