On Set with Martin Short & Steve Martin

July 18, 2019

Jenna – Co-founder of The Beauty Team writes:

Myself and my team member Nicole had the pleasure of working with Martin Short and Steve Martin recently on two separate occasions.

This is the third time I personally have had the pleasure to work with Martin Short, and the first time with Steve Martin! These two comedy legends are an absolute pleasure to work with. They have been friends for 30 years, and their secret to a lasting friendship? Laughter!

So many people ask me how it is to work with Martin Short, and my response is always that he’s hilarious even when I’m doing his makeup! My mother actually grew up with him and my great grandmother babysat him, so my family has a long history with him. I’ll never forget the second time I did his makeup and I asked him to take a picture with me. I said to Marty: what should we do in the photo? He said “Well, you should do my makeup!” We laughed and laughed and this was the photo that was captured:

image1

Martin Short and Steve Martin were interviewed for a 60 Minutes Australia feature where I did their makeup on stage after their sound check. I had the pleasure to be able to sit in on for awhile, and prior to their stage show “Now You See Them, Soon You Won’t” later that evening.

image2

It was a makeup application where I had to do everything on stage prior to their interview, so I spritzed their faces with Glo Skin Beauty hydration mist to quickly prep. I then held my Glo Skin Beauty therapeutic makeup palette and powder brush for a quick and easy application with enough coverage to make them look flawless. I followed this by a quick brow and concealer application and scurried off the stage. Nicole then did their makeup on location for the second day of interviews.

Sun Life Financial + Dunk for Diabetes Getting Kids Camera-Ready for a Great Cause

June 13, 2019

Forty kids on the basketball court + two Toronto Raptors = a fun TV commercial shoot for Dunk for Diabetes

Sun Life Financial, the Toronto Raptors, NBA Canada and Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada have teamed up for an awesome initiative called Dunk for Diabetes. Through this innovative program, they hope to encourage healthy habits in children and help prevent type 2 diabetes.

In order to raise awareness about this important cause, Phanta Media recently shot a commercial promoting Dunk for Diabetes, featuring 40 children and two Toronto Raptors—Fred VanVleet and Pascal Siakam (aka Spicy P!)—who surprised the kids with some fun on the basketball court.

The Beauty Team was honoured to be asked to provide grooming services to help ensure that the kids and the Raptors were shine-free, polished and ready for the camera on shoot day. The Beauty Team’s co-founding makeup artist Victoria Fedosoff took care of the grooming and Danielle took care of wardrobe styling. Both were tasked with the challenge of wrangling 40 kids in the green room and keeping up with them as they needed touch ups throughout the day.

The Team

How do you ensure kids are ready for the camera?

Do they really need makeup? That’s a great question! For any commercial shoot, you want to control shine on the skin, which can be distracting under the bright TV lights. Victoria used concealer and powder sparingly to control shine and cover blemishes, plus a little bit of blush to bring out a healthy glow, and a finishing spray to keep everything in place. And when kids are running around excited about playing basketball with a couple of Toronto Raptors, you can see how their hair might get messy! It’s important to have someone nearby to keep those fly-aways in check.

As you can see from the commercial below, the results couldn’t have turned out better. Plus, it’s always a bonus to provide our services for a great cause!

BACKYARD BUILDS: Hear from the Onset Makeup Artists!

April 5, 2017

Get insider info from our hair and makeup artists on the set of HGTV’s Backyard Builds and learn top tips for looking flawless on screen!

FullSizeRender (7)

We asked The Beauty Team artists, Justine and Natasha, a few questions about their experience working on the set of Backyard Builds:

  1. You used FACE Atelier products on Sarah and Brian. Which were your favourites?

J: My favourite FACE Atelier products had to be the FACE Atelier Ultra Pressed Powder for Brian and FACE Atelier Jolie Lipstick for Sarah—she loves a pop of colour!

N: Other than FACE Atelier, Pro Long Wear Concealer from MAC was great for under their eyes or on any problem spots.

  1. How did you control shine on long shoot days?

face_atelier_ultra_matteJ: The trick to controlling shine was to prime with FACE Atelier Ultra Matte, use the FACE Atelier Ultra Pressed Powder then follow with one more layer of FACE Atelier Ultra Matte.

N: Blotting papers by Elf and Make up Forever HD loose powder were key for controlling shine. On long days we would even clean the face and start fresh!

3. What were your set bag essentials?

J: My set bag essentials were the FACE Atelier Ultra pressed powder, FACE Atelier Jolie Lipstick, and two bottles of water with straws to keep the talent hydrated!

N: For me, Make up Forever HD translucent powder, lip balm, and make up setting spray!

  1. What was your favourite look on Sarah?

J: Sarah always looked her best with a bit of Colour Runway on the cheeks and FACE Atelier lipstick in Jolie on the lips!

N: For Sarah, less is more! Blush and a coral lip!

  1. What is a typical day as a makeup artist on set of Backyard Builds?

J: No two days were the same on Backyard Builds! I was always ready to climb a tree house ladder for touch ups.

N: A typical day on an outdoor set meant always being ready behind the scenes to fix flyaway hairs!

  1. What is your best tip for looking amazing on camera?

J: The best tip to looking good on camera is staying hydrated.

N: Blending your blush and contour is important but don’t be afraid to go a little heavier as the camera may not pick up the pigment!

Be sure to tune in for the premiere of Backyard Builds on April 6th at 10 p.m. and catch the work of The Beauty Team on the big screen!

The making of Spirit Animals at NightShift WR !

November 17, 2014

The Beauty Team started off November with the opportunity to be a part of Kitchener’s second Night Shift 2014 event! The event is a nuit blanche-style festival of art, culture and nocturnal adventure!

image

We had a lot of fun executing creative makeup looks on the models from Gemini. Special thanks to JVT Photography for beautifully capturing these photos.

image

This particular look was spirit animal inspired, and I just put my own spin on it! I used a TON of feathers and applied them with lash glue. The rest of the face I mainly used the MAKE UP FOR EVER Flash palette to create the fur like makeup.

image

BeautyNote:
Always set liquid or cream makeup with powder so you don’t get creasing or smudging!

image

Makeup Artist, Krys (thebeautyteam.) also created some amazing spirit animal looks, with really defined contours and brows!

Night shift 2014 was such a fun evening bringing out our inner creativity with these Avant Guard looks! We hope to be a part of this fabulous annual event next year!

Sante Natural Cosmetics

August 18, 2013

The Beauty Team is excited to send some of our talented Makeup Artists out to work in pharmacies, natural/organic stores and events with a unique cosmetic brand such as Sante Naturkosmetik.

sante_banner

The entire facial make-up line is developed and manufactured in Germany and meets the strict criteria for Certified Natural Cosmetics (according BDIH) with the exception of the Nail Polish. These purely plant sourced products offer palettes of pure colours derived from nature and are infused with Organic Jojoba and Chamomile.  They not only glide on like butter but they smell sweet and fresh. To tell you the truth the products smell better than some of our most favourite body butters or fragrances!

Santesetup.jpg

Sante is geared towards (but not limited to) a young, fresh and trendy clientele and is great for sensitive skin.  The products are innovative and offered at an affordable price point (all priced under $30.00).

Cosmetic companies are definitely recognizing that customer’s read ingredients and are very educated about what they put on their skin. We’re loving that this line offers some gluten-free and vegan options and that all of their products are not tested on animals. We will definitely be recommending this line to clients with sensitivities and specific ingredient requirements.

Burlington-20130814-00004

We were lucky enough to sample a few products from this Natural Makeup line and look forward to sharing our reviews with our readers in the next few weeks.

So far our favourite products from the line are the Pressed Powder because of its ability to melt into the skin, even out skintone and add a healthy glow. Truthfully, what got us was the fresh scent. Who knew a natural product could smell so good!? We are also loving Sante Lipsticks  which have great opacity, moisturize, protect and are available in a wide array of 24 shades.

Over all these made in Germany products are good quality and high in pigment. We do believe their range of colour is good, but would like to see a few more brighter shades as they attract the eye and always look great on the skin.

This line already has a big following especially by customers that are aware of healthy cosmetic ingredients and we applaud and appreciate them for that!

You can view and read more about Sante’s products at http://www.sante-usa.com

Products can be purchased online or at most local natural and organic stores and pharmacies.

Keep an eye our for The Beauty Team demoing these natural products at select locations in the GTA this September!

Thanks for having us onboard Sante!

On Set with Rent Frock Repeat

July 23, 2013

A few months ago The Beauty Team  teamed up with Rent Frock Repeat to work on their Summer look book. We instantly fell in love with this Canadian business. What a brilliant idea, giving ladies access to designer gowns that they can rent at a fraction of the price. I mean, how many times have you purchased a new dress for an event and then left it to sit in your closet and never be worn again!?

BKk9JiCCEAESSwm

Lisa Delorme and Kristy Wieber, the ladies behind RfR believe “style is more then just investing. It’s about experimenting, trying new looks and having fun. It’s time to say goodbye to having lots of clothes but nothing to wear, and hello to always having the perfect frock for all of life’s special occasions”

Screen-Shot-2013-07-22-at-11.50.08-PM

Redness Relief Alert!

July 19, 2013

So it’s summer and we all are guilty of some slight sun burn, I’m sure. I have a solution that will soothe the skin, take down your redness and actually hydrate. Who knew a powder would actually work as an after-sun aid? I first used this magic powder on set for Deck Wars for HGTV Canada. I always tell people the funny story about how the host of the show didn’t understand why his makeup wasn’t coming off his nose at the end of the night after a long season of filming. I remember Paul saying to me “Jenna, I wash my face and my nose doesn’t have it’s usual redness, why is this?” I laughed because it wasn’t that his makeup wasn’t coming off with his regular cleanser, it was because the product was actually helping to heal his rosacea . He wanted the name of it and needed to know where he could get it. I love when even the most masculine men get hooked on what’s in my beauty kit!

Paul LaFrance of Deckwars

This powder acts as a therapeutic anti-inflammatory to take down redness and/or puffiness caused by acne, rosacea or sunburn for example. This unique formulation neutralizes surface redness and soothes skin with ingredients including honeysuckle, zinc oxide, licorice and caffeine. Ideal for even the most sensitive skin, and after advanced chemical and microderm treatments.

Benefits

Surface redness is visibly reduced on the spot, while ingredients like lonicera japoninca extract (honey suckle), zinc oxide and caffeine help soothe Rosacea skin conditions or redness from overexposure to sun and wind. Formulated with glominerals’ exclusive blend of antioxidants, including vitamins A, C, E and green tea, it provides nutrients that are vital to maintaining skin’s healthy radiance.

Directions

  • Wear alone, under or over foundation and re-apply throughout the day as needed.
  • Beneficial for patients after chemical and microderm treatments or to aid sun or wind burn.

You can gain access to Redness Relief Powder retailing for $38 at The Beauty Team Boutique

Before and After: Joanne

June 14, 2013

Joanne:

Age: 32

Occupation:  Television host

Working in the media as a Television Host, Joanne is constantly on the go. She needed a look that is classic, on trend and easy to achieve on her own.

joanne1

Makeup:

Joanne has great blue eyes, loves to play them up and isn’t scared of a little makeup.  First things first, to ensure her look would last from day to night, I primed her eyes with Urban Decay’s primer potion followed by cool tones of eyeshadow from Stila’s “In the Know” palette which coordinated perfectly with her outfits. I wanted  to draw extra attention to the eyes and  did so by lining them (inside and out) with a black waterproof liner by Dior.

Stila - in the know palette

dior - black waterproof liner

I evened out her skin using FACE ateliers ultra foundation in Ivory and highlighted key area’s including under eyes, bridge of nose, centre of her chin using  Dior’s skin flash radiance booster pen in Roseglow

FACE atelier Ultra Foundation

dior - radiance booster pen - rose glow

To tie the look together I applied  Nars multiple in Riviera, a true pink cream blush to her cheeks which gave her a youthful and luminous glow.

nars multiple -riviera

Lastly, to pair with her outgoing personality and girly style I applied a custom blend of a pink Revlon shade (color unknown as it came in a palette) followed by a Raspberry gloss, Penny Arcade by NARS.

nars - larger then life gloss - penny arcade

Hair:

With her gorgeous long hair and it only felt right to give Joanne some big loose waves. To achieve this look Evita sectioned the hair into four parts and wrapped it around a 2 inch curling iron. She sprayed the hair with a bit of Icon – DONE finishing spray and let it sit for about 10 minutes.  After everything was set  she ran a Large Paddle brush over the curls to make it loose and wavy. She then applied a dime size of styling paste to give the curls a bit of definition and added shine.
