On Set with Martin Short & Steve Martin

July 18, 2019

Jenna – Co-founder of The Beauty Team writes:

Myself and my team member Nicole had the pleasure of working with Martin Short and Steve Martin recently on two separate occasions.

This is the third time I personally have had the pleasure to work with Martin Short, and the first time with Steve Martin! These two comedy legends are an absolute pleasure to work with. They have been friends for 30 years, and their secret to a lasting friendship? Laughter!

So many people ask me how it is to work with Martin Short, and my response is always that he’s hilarious even when I’m doing his makeup! My mother actually grew up with him and my great grandmother babysat him, so my family has a long history with him. I’ll never forget the second time I did his makeup and I asked him to take a picture with me. I said to Marty: what should we do in the photo? He said “Well, you should do my makeup!” We laughed and laughed and this was the photo that was captured:

image1

Martin Short and Steve Martin were interviewed for a 60 Minutes Australia feature where I did their makeup on stage after their sound check. I had the pleasure to be able to sit in on for awhile, and prior to their stage show “Now You See Them, Soon You Won’t” later that evening.

image2

It was a makeup application where I had to do everything on stage prior to their interview, so I spritzed their faces with Glo Skin Beauty hydration mist to quickly prep. I then held my Glo Skin Beauty therapeutic makeup palette and powder brush for a quick and easy application with enough coverage to make them look flawless. I followed this by a quick brow and concealer application and scurried off the stage. Nicole then did their makeup on location for the second day of interviews.

Canadian Beauty & Wellness Brands to add to your routine

July 1, 2019

Canadian beauty brands that are killing it right now.

This Canada Day we want to spotlight some of the brands in beauty that were founded right here in our amazing country. If you’re looking to support Canadian companies and discover some homegrown products, check out our picks below!

Bite Beauty

bite red

This Canadian lip product brand was founded in 2011 and exclusively sold through Sephora and their own online storefront. The shade range and texture of all Bite lipsticks are to die for, as they’re made with food-grade ingredients and are infused with resveratrol. Resveratol is an antioxidant that can be found in the skin of grapes and red wine, which helps with fine lines and anti-aging. So not only are you getting a gorgeous smooth and pigmented application, it’s also helping to keep your lips looking their best! Bite also operates brick and mortar stores called “Lop Lab by Bite”, with one located in Downtown Toronto, where you can work with their team of technicians to get your own custom lippie made right in front of you! This would be such a fun and unique thing to do for a girls day or pre-bachelorette festivities with your wedding party! Overall, Bite Beauty is such an amazing brand and we’re so proud to claim them as our own!

Saje

saje

Who isn’t into diffusing these days?! Saje was founded by a Canadian husband and wife team when the husband had suffered from a serious car accident. When he was originally trying to find a more natural and effective pain relief solution for his recovery, paired with his wife’s retail business background, they were able to create a natural wellness brand. We love Liquid Sunshine diffuser blend to get us moving in the morning and can always use a little Tranquility face and body mist to relax and ease our minds the night before a big event. With their commitment to 100% natural formulations, and the majority of our products are manufactured locally, Saje is a Canadian brand we can fully support!

Sappho New Paradigm

sappho

A more recent addition to the Canadian beauty scene, Sappho New Paradigm was founded in November 2016 by Emmy nominated makeup artist JoAnn Fowler. Sappho New Paradigm is a natural and organic cosmetic brand, that focuses on developing a luxury products that are made from carcinogen-free ingredients. The brand was developed with experts in the field of green chemistry, and offers formulations created with the finest of certified organic ingredients and infused with phyto nutrients. This brand is great for those no-makeup makeup wearers that prefer a more natural look. Top products recommended by The Beauty Team:

  • Essential Foundation: This line is described as “Light to medium buildable coverage, this line is free of regular coconut oil, moisturizing and also a favourite for those with problematic breakouts. For those that like sheer coverage, it is easily thinned with moisturizer. The product smells amazing and feels feather light. With a base of certified organic aloe juice and certificated organic jojoba oil, we have added just a touch of shea for moisture and play… it’s lovely!”
  • Lip Glosses: Their line of organic lip glosses are sweetened with just a touch of stevia and a pinch of lemon grass and are described as “soft, silky, smooth, richly pigmented and yummy”. With just 4 shades offered in the range right now, we’re looking forward to more colour offerings to come!

Cardea AuSet

cardea

A beautifully feminine beauty and wellness brand that creates products that are as natural as possible and that celebrate Canadian ingredients and suppliers. The brand was founded in the Southern Ontario Greenbelt, and use materials that are sourced from Canadian suppliers who are located close by and align with the company’s ethical considerations. Cardea AuSet uses pure essential oils, hydrosols, minerals, and plant-based ingredients that are GMO-free. We personally love theROSA Facial Mist, a hydrating rose water and aloe juice mist, and the SEA Mineral Soak, a detoxifying bath soak made from the salts from the Dead Sea and Himalayas plus dried rose petals. Fun fact: their Noire Charcoal Mask was recently featured in Kourtney Kardashian’s Poosh box to launch her new lifestyle website, along with a Saje diffuser and oils.

DECIEM: The Ordinary

ordinary

Last, but far from the least on our list, DECIEM: The Abnormal Beauty Company is an umbrella company of a few different beauty brands, including the super popular line The Ordinary. DECIEM was founded in Toronto in 2013 and has since expanded across the globe, with a growing portfolio of more than 50 products in more than 15 markets. All DECIEM products, across all brands including The Ordinary, are free of parabens, sulphates, mineral oil, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, animal oils, coal tar dyes, formaldehyde, mercury, oxybenzone. The Ordinary is a collection of products that focus on the core effective ingredients needed for skin concerns at reasonable price points that allow the brand to be more accessible by more consumers. We’ve had so many of our clients tell us about this brand and literally haven’t met one person who doesn’t rave about the entire line that doesn’t break the bank and is a game changer for your skin regime.

Those are just some of our favourite Canadian brands in the beauty industry, and we’d love to hear what other Canadian products or brands you’d recommend. Supporting local and homegrown brands is important to us and we’d love to learn about others. We hope you have a wonderful Canada Day long weekend!

Sun Life Financial + Dunk for Diabetes Getting Kids Camera-Ready for a Great Cause

June 13, 2019

Forty kids on the basketball court + two Toronto Raptors = a fun TV commercial shoot for Dunk for Diabetes

Sun Life Financial, the Toronto Raptors, NBA Canada and Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada have teamed up for an awesome initiative called Dunk for Diabetes. Through this innovative program, they hope to encourage healthy habits in children and help prevent type 2 diabetes.

In order to raise awareness about this important cause, Phanta Media recently shot a commercial promoting Dunk for Diabetes, featuring 40 children and two Toronto Raptors—Fred VanVleet and Pascal Siakam (aka Spicy P!)—who surprised the kids with some fun on the basketball court.

The Beauty Team was honoured to be asked to provide grooming services to help ensure that the kids and the Raptors were shine-free, polished and ready for the camera on shoot day. The Beauty Team’s co-founding makeup artist Victoria Fedosoff took care of the grooming and Danielle took care of wardrobe styling. Both were tasked with the challenge of wrangling 40 kids in the green room and keeping up with them as they needed touch ups throughout the day.

The Team

How do you ensure kids are ready for the camera?

Do they really need makeup? That’s a great question! For any commercial shoot, you want to control shine on the skin, which can be distracting under the bright TV lights. Victoria used concealer and powder sparingly to control shine and cover blemishes, plus a little bit of blush to bring out a healthy glow, and a finishing spray to keep everything in place. And when kids are running around excited about playing basketball with a couple of Toronto Raptors, you can see how their hair might get messy! It’s important to have someone nearby to keep those fly-aways in check.

As you can see from the commercial below, the results couldn’t have turned out better. Plus, it’s always a bonus to provide our services for a great cause!

BACKYARD BUILDS: Hear from the Onset Makeup Artists!

April 5, 2017

Get insider info from our hair and makeup artists on the set of HGTV’s Backyard Builds and learn top tips for looking flawless on screen!

FullSizeRender (7)

We asked The Beauty Team artists, Justine and Natasha, a few questions about their experience working on the set of Backyard Builds:

  1. You used FACE Atelier products on Sarah and Brian. Which were your favourites?

J: My favourite FACE Atelier products had to be the FACE Atelier Ultra Pressed Powder for Brian and FACE Atelier Jolie Lipstick for Sarah—she loves a pop of colour!

N: Other than FACE Atelier, Pro Long Wear Concealer from MAC was great for under their eyes or on any problem spots.

  1. How did you control shine on long shoot days?

face_atelier_ultra_matteJ: The trick to controlling shine was to prime with FACE Atelier Ultra Matte, use the FACE Atelier Ultra Pressed Powder then follow with one more layer of FACE Atelier Ultra Matte.

N: Blotting papers by Elf and Make up Forever HD loose powder were key for controlling shine. On long days we would even clean the face and start fresh!

3. What were your set bag essentials?

J: My set bag essentials were the FACE Atelier Ultra pressed powder, FACE Atelier Jolie Lipstick, and two bottles of water with straws to keep the talent hydrated!

N: For me, Make up Forever HD translucent powder, lip balm, and make up setting spray!

  1. What was your favourite look on Sarah?

J: Sarah always looked her best with a bit of Colour Runway on the cheeks and FACE Atelier lipstick in Jolie on the lips!

N: For Sarah, less is more! Blush and a coral lip!

  1. What is a typical day as a makeup artist on set of Backyard Builds?

J: No two days were the same on Backyard Builds! I was always ready to climb a tree house ladder for touch ups.

N: A typical day on an outdoor set meant always being ready behind the scenes to fix flyaway hairs!

  1. What is your best tip for looking amazing on camera?

J: The best tip to looking good on camera is staying hydrated.

N: Blending your blush and contour is important but don’t be afraid to go a little heavier as the camera may not pick up the pigment!

Be sure to tune in for the premiere of Backyard Builds on April 6th at 10 p.m. and catch the work of The Beauty Team on the big screen!

Conair Infiniti Pro Straightener – Pro or No?

March 6, 2017

image1Our hair expert and OUAI Canadian Educator, Alysse, tested out the Conair Infiniti Pro Straightener and we just had to ask her about it!

Here are her answers:

Q: What are your favourite features of this product?

A: The number one thing was that it heated up quickly and was simple to use! I personally loved how it left some movement in my hair as opposed to making it pin straight and lifeless. My models also loved how it didn’t pull and made their hair feel silky and shiny.

Q: Who would you recommend this product to?

A: I would recommend this product to a variety of hair types however, if you have very kinky roots this product is not for you. The straightener doesn’t get close enough to smooth them out. I would say the target market is the girl on-the-go. It heats up quickly and smooths out hair giving you a polished look in minutes.

Q: Would you use this on a daily basis?

A: I would definitely use this on a daily basis. It’s always good to have easy-to-use products on hand to make mornings less stressful! Not to mention, if it makes my models happy I really can’t complain!

Q: Overall, do you give this product your stamp of approval?

A: Yes! It surprised me. I didn’t think I would like it as much as I did! I would definitely recommend trying the Conair Infiniti Pro Straightener.

Thanks Alysse!

If you’re always on-the-go but don’t want to sacrifice your beauty routine, the Conair Pro Infiniti straightener may be the perfect tool to add to your belt.

Try it out and let us know what you think of the Conair Infiniti Pro Straightener!

Q&A with OUAI’s Canadian Educator, Alysse Morrison

February 13, 2017

If you keep up with the Kardashians, you’ve probably seen some of the work of Jen Atkin, celeb hairstylist. She has worked with Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Emma Stone, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Alba, Cindy Crawford, Katy Perry, and Christina Hendricks, to name a few. However, we’re not here to discuss her relationship to the stars. We’re here to talk about her haircare line, OUAI. OUAI is “a line for real life, for real women”, as Atkin says herself. It is about making luxury accessible and easy in a world where life can be hard. While we support this mantra, we have a new reason to love OUAI.

alysse

It is with great honour that we introduce Toronto hairstylist Alysse, member of The Beauty Team, and now, Canadian Educator for the OUAI line. We were eager to ask Alysse a few questions about her new position. Here’s what she said:

Q: What inspired you to pursue this position?

A: One of my biggest inspirations in my hairstyling career has always been women in the industry. I love Jen Atkin and her line. The idea of working for someone whom I idolize just seemed like a dream.

Q: What do you love about the job?

A: I love educating people about hair. Being able to do this with new people every day just seemed like something I’d be great at because I love it. I find Sephora’s staff education is lacking in the hair department so I thought this was an amazing idea!

Q: What is your favourite OUAI Product?

A: I can’t wait to try the dry shampoo foam! It seems amazing! Out of the products I have tried, I absolutely love the dry texture spray. You can use it like a dry shampoo, or through your ends to get a gorgeous beachy look.

Q: What is the best current hair trend, in your opinion?

A: I love very easy, undone hair which is trendy right now. The lived-in look—it’s effortless and looks cool.

Q: What are your favourite beauty/hair icons?

A: Well of course Jen Atkin! When I was in school we were asked to name well-known females in the industry and the only one we could name was Vivenne MacKinder. She’s known for her bridal looks. To have a new fashion forward woman to add to the list was vital for our industry. Jen has created a line that makes getting ready fast and easy. She knows what the consumer needs!

Rihanna’s gown and stunning headpiece were perfectly complimented by her Makeup. Mylah Morales created her look with an Asian-inspired color palette (lots of pinks) and used blush on both her eyes and lips. The focus of the look were her bold brows. She used Diorshow Brow Styler (one of our faves) to define and groom.

Selena-Gomez-Met-Gala-2015-Beauty-Hair

Selena Gomez went for a sexy and sophisticated look with a sleek updo, dark red lips, a smokey cat eye and lots of lashes to really emphasize the drama.

KendallJennerMetBallMakeup2015

Kendall Jenner – the face of Estee Lauder – showed up with defined brows, dewy skin and a sleek wing liner. To achieve the wing, Kendall’s makeup artist used Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Zero-Smudge Liquid Eyeliner in Black and defined her long lashes with Little Black Primer. To create those bold brows, the Automatic Brow Pencil was applied and finished off with a pink pout by applying Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Insatiable Ivory all over her lips.

Cara Delevingne made a statement with her full sleeve faux body art, nude lips and some seriously sexy smokey eyes.

beyonce_makeup_metball_2015

All hail the Queen Bee – Beyoncé – when it comes to any appearance, her makeup is always flawless and coordinates with the clothes she wears. This year at the 2015 Met Ball, Beyoncé wore only affordable makeup that you can get at your nearest drug store… and yes, we do mean L’Oreal!

To create Beyonce’s mod eye, her makeup artist used a mix of L’Oreal Paris Infallible Eye Shadows in Endless Sea and Infinite Sky ($8.00) which stood out beautifully against her sun kissed skin. She finished off the look with the Voluminous Miss Manga Mascara in black.
